Greener Prawns - Sustainable Aquaculture
| Seafarm has been a leader in sustainable aquaculture for more than a quarter of a century, supplying consumers with a clean, green Australian prawn.
Aquaculture — sometimes called aquafarming — is the rearing of fish to supplement the natural supply. Seafarm's Crystal Bay Prawns are reared under controlled conditions and are free of antibiotics and hormones. And while fish populations are under pressure through overfishing of the high seas, aquaculture has emerged as the fastest-growing animal food producing sector and now accounts for 47 percent of all fish consumed by humans as food.

However not all aquafarming is environmentally friendly. Mindful of the problems effluent water can bring to the environment, Seafarm retains this water and reuses it within the farm to successfully fill ponds for stocking, generating a food source for the young prawns.
The net result of water reuse being that more nutrients are retained within the farm and converted into prawn flesh and less are lost to the environment.
Seafarm has entered into a Voluntary Conservation Agreement with the Queensland government whereby a large parcel of land totalling more than 45 hectares has been retained in perpetuity as a nature buffer between our two farms. This allows the movement of animals in and around the sites while acknowledging the sensitivity of an associated riparian habitat adjacent to Five Mile Creek.
Nestled amongst some of the world’s most precious and pristine environments, Crystal Bay Prawns have been operating in sustainable harmony with the environment for over 25 years, taking advantage of its benefits without negatively impacting the region’s delicate balance.
